FATAL LOVE 1-8 SEQUEL TO SUGAR MUMMY

*A FATAL LOVE (Sequel to THE SUGAR MUMMY)*
Episode 1.

Welcome to Doperch, Latest trending post

I woke up and stared at the window curtains in the bedroom.
The big clock on the wall revealed the time to be quarter to
seven in the morning. Enny, my wife, lay beside me. I
watched her briefly. She looked peaceful and blissful in her
sleep.
It was Saturday, a week after our wedding. This morning, we
intended to end our honeymoon in Abuja and return to
Lagos. The last six days had been very dreamy. We had
enjoyed each other greatly, just lazing around, eating,
drinking and making love. Honestly, it was now I really knew
how sweet it was to be married. Apart from rare visits to
some places of interest in the city, we had largely remained
indoors, savoring the company of each other.
There was a rap on the door.
‘Yes, come in. The door is not locked,’ I said.
Meimunat entered the room.
‘Good morning, bro Alex,’ she greeted.
‘Good morning, aunty. How was your night?’
‘It was fine. I’ve come to ask what you will like to have for
breakfast.’
‘Toast bread and coffee should be okay,’ I replied.
She nodded and left. Meimunat had really done well in
taking good care of us. I would not forget her.
I kissed my sleeping wife. That had been my way of waking
her up. We soon had our bath together and dressed up. We
enjoyed the breakfast and packed our things. I called the cab
driver we had been using to move around. I tipped Meimunat
generously before leaving the house.
Our flight back to Lagos was smooth. As Enny and I sat side
by side, we held hands like a couple genuinely in love. From
the local wing of the airport at Ikeja, we took a cab to my
residence – now, our residence. At Ketu Bus stop, Enny said
she would prefer to alight from the cab so that she could go
straight to Mile 12 market and buy meat and soup
ingredients. I gave her some money for that purpose and she
parted.
The driver drove me home. I put our bags in the bedroom
and surveyed the house. Everything had been the way we left
it. All our wedding gifts were in the second bedroom, still
wrapped.
I changed to a t-shirt and jeans. While awaiting Enny, I sat in
the sitting room and and watched the news channel. My
phone rang. It was from the number I saved as Steph III,
Steph’s American number.
I whistled to myself. Steph had finally decided to call me.
‘Hello, Alex.’
‘Hi, Steph. Long time no see.’
She laughed over the line. ‘Are you alone or is Enny with
you?’
‘I’m alone. She went to the market to get some stuffs.’
‘I see. So, how’s everything?’
‘Not bad,’ I replied. ‘Why did you refuse to call me all this
while?’
‘Because I’m crossed with you.’
‘Why must you? You should understand everything.’
‘It’s not easy for me, Alex.’
I sighed. ‘Don’t worry. You’ll get over it, Steph. I pray you will
have a loving and understanding husband in the nearest
future.’
I expected to hear an Amen, but I didn’t hear a thing.
‘I need a favor from you, Alex.’
A favor for Steph? I was all curious. ‘What could that be?’

EPISODE 2-4

Welcome to Doperch, Latest trending post

‘I need a favor from you, Alex.’
A favor for Steph? I was all curious. ‘What could that be?’
‘Mum is coming back to Nigeria next week.’
‘Oh, but that’s good news.’
There was a pause. ‘I’ve told her I agree to settle down in
Nigeria.’
I was alert. My mind raced fast. ‘I’m sure mummy will be
happy to hear your change of mind.’
‘That’s the problem,’ Steph replied. ‘She has changed her
mind too. She says she now prefers I should remain in
America.’
I whistled shortly. ‘Wow. But then you should be happy.
That’s what you wanted all along.’
‘I don’t want it again. I want to come to Nigeria. Can you help
me to talk to her to change her mind?’
My mind raced again. I could understand why her mother
wanted Steph to remain in the U.S. I had the sneaky
conviction that she wanted the two of us to remain
separated for as long as possible. But, I would not tell Steph
that.
‘Did she give you reason for wanting you to stay over there?’
I asked. Hi Admin on WhatsApp +2348022720459 for you to be added to our story platform but state clearly how you get to know about us.
‘She said I should have some working experience in
America. She wants me to have at least a couple of years’
experience.’
‘That’s not a bad idea,’ I found myself saying. ‘Don’t you
think it’s not entirely a bad idea?’
‘It’s not totally bad, but I feel like coming home.’
I chuckled. ‘Can you tell me why you suddenly changed your
mind?’
There was another pause. ‘I just changed my mind, and
that’s it,’ she said.
Again, I had another sneaky feeling: this time, that Steph
was not telling me the whole truth.
‘Can you just try to tell mum that it would be better if I come
home?’ Steph said.
I nodded as if she could see me. ‘Alright, I’ll see what I can
do.’
‘Oh, thank you. You’re her boy and she has high opinions of
you, so, just try,’ Steph said further.
I was bemused by her use of words, ‘you’re her boy.’ I
nodded again. ‘So, how’s life in the U.S?’
‘Not bad, but I miss you guys. Alex, I miss you.’
‘Well, such is life,’ I philosophized.
We chatted a bit more before terminating the conversation. I
thought over the whole thing. Madam B must have planned
to take Steph away, I
had no doubt. I realized it was a good idea. Steph being out
of the way would make me focus on my marriage and to
build it properly.
Some minutes later, Enny returned from the market. I joined
her in the kitchen as she fried the chicken and prepared the
soup. She was good in cooking, no doubt.
‘Steph called not long ago,’ I informed.
‘How’s she? When is she coming back?’
‘It’s like madam wants her to remain in the U.S.’
‘That will be better,’ Enny said with finality. ‘Let her work and
have some working experience over there.’
I only grinned.
‘Deola would be coming over today,’ Enny said, a couple of
minutes later. ‘She called me a while ago that she would
soon be on her way.’
Deola was one of her younger sisters. Enny had earlier told
me that she would like Deola to come and be staying with
her – or rather, with us – and I had acquiesced. At twenty
one, Deola was a level 200 Mass Communication student at
Lagos State University.
‘No problem. She’s welcome.’
Truly, some minutes later, Deola came in with her bag. What
a change! About a week and a day ago, I was the only
occupant of the apartment.
Now, we were three. Glory be to God.
Some hours later, Madam B called to inform that she would
be returning to Nigeria by Tuesday the following week. She
explained further that
Steph would not be returning with her as she – the madam –
had come to realize that it was better for her to have a
couple of years’ working experience in the U.S. The way
madam glibly explained the reason for her change of mind
gave me no room to argue that Steph should be allowed to
come back home.

Madam also talked about her health. She said she was in
perfect health and there was no cause for alarm. I was
happy she was in good mood and health.
The next day was Sunday. Enny and I went to the church in
the same traditional wears. We struck people as lovely
couple. In the church, it was time to dance and give thanks
to almighty God.
On Monday morning, we – Enny, Deola and I – left the house
early at the same time. I dropped the ladies at the Ketu bus
stop while I continued on my way to Ikeja.
On getting to the office, Mandy created a little scene.
‘Here comes the latest bridegroom in town,’ she enthused as
she got up from her seat and rushed to give me a hug.
‘Hey, I’m not the latest groom,’ I cautioned. ‘I’m perfectly
sure that between the day I did my wedding and now, many
coules would have wedded.’
My cautious words did mot dwindle her enthusiasm. I could
simply not understant her zeal.
Towards noon, Mr. Taju and I went to the airport to welcome
Madam B from her American trip. When she finally srepped
into the Arrival Hall, I could see that she looked fresh,
rejuvenerated and even more beautiful.
‘Welcome back, madam,’ I greeted. We had a hug.
Somehow, I had a vague thought that Steph might return
with her. It was a mere wishful thinking, as madam had
returned alone.

‘Look at you, Alex,’ she commented after we had hugged.
‘You look so robust. Without doubt, Enny, your wife is taking
good care of you.’
As Mr. Taju drove us to madam’s mansion, she chatted
excitedly about her trip. Somehow, I wished Enny and I
would relocate to live in God’s own country.
Later that evening, Enny and I went to formally greet madam
and to thank her for the immeasurable contributions she
made towards our wedding. When we were about to leave,
she gave Enny gifts of Cartier gold wrist watch, handbags,
shoes and some clothes.
As I drove Enny back home, she could not but comment
about madam’s generosity.
‘This woman is really generous,’ Enny said. ‘After spending
so much on you, look at the exorbitant gifts she gave to me.
She must be the most generous person I’ve ever seen.’
I nodded in agreement. ‘Without doubt, madam is very
generous.’
Three days after Madam B had returned, Steph called me.
She sounded bright. She informed that she had been
shortlisted by a foremost
computer firm in the U.S and was positive about getting a
good job soon.
‘Oh, that’s good news, Steph. I wish you all the best.’
‘Thanks. How’s Naija?’
I sighed. ‘All is not so well, but we thank God.’ Hi Admin on WhatsApp +2348022720459 for you to be added to our story platform but state clearly how you get to know about us.
We chatted for more several minutes before the
conversation ended. I observed that she always called about
noon on working days. Steph
hardly called on weekends and anytime she did, she would
first ask if I was alone or if Enny was with me.
About a week after she first informed that she was
shortlisted for the computer firm job, she called again to tell
me that she had secured the job.
‘Congratulations,’ I enthused. I was indeed happy for her.
When she told me her remuneration, I mentally calculated
how much that would be in
naira. I could not but whistle when I realized how much she
would be making.
‘I still miss you, Alex,’ she said.
‘You don’t have to,’ I replied. Even to me, my voice was
unconvincing. ‘Steph, you’re very beautiful. I’m sure many
guys over there will love to
have you as their own. Go ahead and have yourself a good
man. Forget about Alex. He is happily married now. Move on
with your life. You have
a wonderful life ahead of you. Live it to the best.’
I felt I had given a homily, a necessary one. There was a
long pause. ‘Hello, Steph, are you still there?’
‘Yeah, I am. I wish it’s as simple as you’re trying to make it.’
‘There’s nothing difficult in it,’ I pointed out. ‘Just zero your
mind to that place. America is a wonderful land. Many young
ones here are ready to sell an eye to get over there and
have the kind of opportunity you have.’
There was a pause. She finally promised to call again and
ended the conversation. I heaved a sigh. I wished Steph
would get it into her pretty head the truth of what I had said

I decided to be a dotting husband to my darling wife. There
were days I would buy something nice for her. There were
times I would branch at eatery and buy special meals for her.
Almost every weekend, we would drive out for sightseeing.
We visited places of interest in Lagos including the MUSON
center, the National Theatre, Silverbird gallery and the bar
beach.
Sometimes, I would put roses on the bed. Sometimes, I
would arrange for a candle-lit dinner. She would cling and
profess appreciation. We were really having the fun of our
lives.
Steph had made it an habit to be calling me by noon, at
least once every other day – Monday to Friday. She would tell
me about her working place experience. She talked about
how she was sharing an apartment with a female friend and
how life was going on. She painted a very rosy picture of
that place. I had a feeling she was saying all these to
stimulate my interest in America. I might be wrong but that
was my feeling.
About four weeks after my wedding, I was in the office
working when Steph called me by Skype.
‘Hello, Steph,’ I smiled up at her. I could see that she locked
very relaxed and happy.
‘Good morning, Alex. How d’you do?’
‘I’m fine. I can see that you’re fine too. In fact you look very
lively.’
‘Yeah. Can you guess why?’
I chuckled. ‘You know I’m not good at guessing.’
‘Just try.’
I smiled. ‘Alright. Have you got a promotion at your place of
work?’
‘No.’
‘You won a jackpot?’
‘No. I don’t do that.’
I feigned exasperation. ‘Tell me why you look so excited
then.’
There was a long pause. She stared at my face with the
radiant smile there. ‘Alex, I’m pregnant.’
My face became frozen. ‘What, what did you say ?’ I
stammered.
‘I’m pregnant, Alex. I’m carrying your baby.’
My hands became stiff, so stiff that the phone dropped from
my hand. It clattered on the floor and switched off. I picked
it up and switched it
on again, breathing heavily. Did I hear correctly? Did she say
she was carrying my baby? Oh God! Oh God!’
If indeed it was true, then there was one solution: terminate
the pregnancy. No lady or woman had ever had abortion on
my behest. In Steph’s
case. I was really to go the bad way. My mind was in a
frenzy mode. Well, so what if she was pregnant? We would
go for that simple solution and that would be the end of the
hassles.
I sat down and thought of many things. What if Enny knew
what had happened? I visualize disappointment and pain in
her countenance. No, no,
no. This whole drama must end at this stage.
Steph called back. ‘What happened?’ she asked.
‘Sorry the phone fell down and switched off,’ I explained.
‘Are you really sure of what you were saying?’
‘Of course. I’ve done the pregnancy test. It’s eight weeks
old.’
I whistled. Beads of sweats had started forming on my
brows.

*A FATAL LOVE (Sequel to THE SUGAR MUMMY)*
Episode 3

‘I’m keeping the baby, Alex.’
My heart beat increased again. ‘You will do no such thing,
Steph.’
‘That’s exactly what I’ll do. I want to have the baby.’
‘You don’t know what you’re saying young lady. Do you
realize I’m a married man now? Do you realize this will ruin
my marriage, and even my relationship with your mum?’
‘Alex, you’re shouting,’ she scolded.
I breathed in and out slowly. ‘I’m sorry. Now, listen to me,
you can’t have the baby. Maybe I should ask first: is it my
baby or not?’
‘What kind of question is that? Of course it’s your baby!’
‘Alright. Very good. Go and get rid of it.’
‘No way. I want the baby and I’m going to have him.’
I realized I was having a headache. ‘But why, Steph? Why
d’you want to ruin my marriage and career?’
‘No one is ruining anything. You can go ahead with your
marriage and your job. As for me, I’m keeping that baby.’
I was exasperated. ‘Think, Steph. How do you think mummy
will react to this? What about Enny? You think she’ll hear
this and things will go on normally?’
To my surprise, Steph laughed. ‘So you can be scared over
little matter like this?’
‘This is no little matter, Steph. My marriage and career are at
stake here.’
‘Alright, calm down.’ She smiled again.
I tried to calm down. Maybe she was joking, after all. Maybe
she was just pulling my legs. I wished and hoped she was.

‘Listen, Alex. I’ve thought out everything. I don’t want to ruin
your job, neither do I want to ruin your marriage. I’ll go
ahead and have the baby, but you don’t worry about
mummy. I’ll take care of that. As for your wife I won’t ever
tell her. It’s as simple as that.’
I shook my head vigorously. ‘That will not work, Steph.
That’s a crazy idea. Your mummy will still get to know. How
do you explain who is responsible for the pregnancy? And
for Enny, one way or the other, she’ll also get to know.’
She smiled again. ‘I told you not to worry about mummy. I’ll
handle that. As for your wife, I won’t tell her a thing. She
won’t know about it. Well, except you tell her. There’s
nothing to worry about, dear.’
My headache had intensified. ‘Alright, Steph. We’ll speak
again. Right now, I have a headache.’
‘Don’t you worry about anything. I’m not asking you to
support me or the baby. I can well take care of everything. I
only wanted you to know that your baby is on the way.’
‘See you again, Steph,’ I said and disconnected the line. The
headache was real. I left my office in search of the office
assistant.
‘Please help me get some paracetamol or aspirin,’ I told him
and gave him some money. I went back to the office. I must
calm down and think
rationally, I told myself. I sat down on my seat, closed my
eyes and tried to make my mind blank. Koli soon came back
with what I asked him to buy.
‘Thank you.’ I collected the drugs from him. I took the
required dose and tried to relax my mind again. There was
no doubt that Steph was driving me crazy.
But, it wasn’t her fault. I was to be blamed for whatever
trouble came my way. If a man could not resist a sultry lady
like Steph, then he must be ready to face whatever came his
way.
I suddenly realized that I was not that scared about Madam
B. I didn’t believe she would sack me just like that, going by
the antecedents. My greatest fear was Enny, my wife. If Enny
should know, she would be mightily disappointed! Oh, what
a mess.
Then Steph’s image came to my mind. She said she was
happy about the pregnancy, how could she? What made her
so confident and smug about the whole thing! How could a
young and beautiful lady like her from a wealthy family feel
happy about carrying the baby of an up coming starter like
me? Honestly I was confused.
But what if she was just teasing me? I shook my head. From
the way she had talked, that was very unlikely. I believed she
was saying the truth. Thinking back now, that Sunday
morning that she came to my house should be about eight
weeks ago. That must be when the conception took place.
Oh God.
Well, be a man and face it, my mind said. Then, I
remembered Steph saying she would take care of her
mother’s aspect. How would she do that?
What about Enny? Calm down, calm down, I told myself.
Steph’s news spoilt the rest of my day. I tried to concentrate
on my work, but it wasn’t easy. The headache, of course,
compounded my situation. When I closed from work, I drove
home slowly. I just had to face the situation, as unsavory as
it was, I told myself. Of course, I did not tell my wife about
it. When she noticed my mood, I told her about the
headache.

I decided that the best thing was to persuade Steph to go
for abortion. She still had a lot of exuberance in her and she
needed to be bridled. The next day, few When it was few
minutes after noon, I decided to call her. I decided to be
subtle with her.
‘Hello, dear,’ I started.
‘Hi, Alex. How d’you do?’
‘I’m fine.’
‘Good to hear that. How’s Enny?’
‘She’s fine.’
‘I need a favor from you, Steph. I hope you’ll oblige me.’
‘What could that favor be?’
‘I want to beg you in the name of God, go and abort that
baby.’
There was a pause. ‘Do you realize abortion is a sin before
God?’ she asked. ‘D’you
realize what you’re asking me to do is a sin before God?’
I was shocked by her reaction. Wonderful! Steph was now
pontificating and telling me what was a sin before the
almighty God.
‘Look at it this way,’ she went on. ‘Is it not a sin to take
another person’s life? That baby is an innocent soul and you
want to take his life. You’re asking me to be wicked, Alex.
I’m sorry, I won’t do that. Rather, I’ll be the one to plead
with you that you should spare the life of an innocent soul,
in the name of God.’
I was dumb-founded by her answer. Oh, God.
‘Are you still there, Alex?’
‘Yeah,’ I answered, my mouth heavy.
‘You should be praying for the safe delivery of the baby.
That’s what you should be praying for.’
‘So, you want to go ahead and have the baby? You want to
have a baby outside wedlock? Is that what you really want?’
She laughed as if I had said something funny. ‘Don’t you
worry about me, Alex. There’s no problem at all.’

I sighed and gave up. Steph was the lady with the strongest
head I had ever met. An idea suddenly came to me. There
was no need to disturb Steph again. I ended the
conversation. What I had in mind might sound ridiculous,
but I believed it was worth trying. I would confess all my sins
to God. I would pray for forgiveness of sins. Then, I would
plead with God to put an end to the fetus in Steph’s womb.
That was how desperate I was about the matter.
That particular prayer was never answered. Rather, the fetus
developed by the day.
Madam appeared not to know a thing about it, and I never
broached the topic. I continued to play the role of a dotting
husband to Enny, pretending that all was perfect.
When the baby was twelve weeks old, Steph sent pictures of
the slight bulge on her tummy to me, clad only in bra and
panties.
She repeated that when the pregnancy was sixteen weeks
old. The more the bulge was becoming obvious, the more I
lived in chagrin.
In the first week of November, Mandy reminded me that
madam’s birthday was a matter of days. She would be fifty
and it was planned to be marked in a grand way. I discussed
the matter with Enny.
‘What befitting gift do you think we can present to her?’ I
asked.
We thought over it and finally decided to give her picture to
an artist for a life portrait. The birthday was marked in a
popular event center in Magodo estate. It was attended by
many dignitaries. When we presented our gift to her, I could
see that she really appreciated it. Hi Admin on WhatsApp +2348022720459 for you to be added to our story platform but state clearly how you get to know about us.
The first Christmas that Enny and I had together, we decided
to have a very time together. Madam suggested we could go
to Abuja, but I preferred somewhere else. We went to a
resort at Ota, Ogun state. We had a blissful time together. All
would have been well, except for the aspect of Steph.
Anytime I remembered her, I would feel some shiver. She
kept sending her pictures of protruding belly to me, and I
kept getting agitated.
By January 1st, we had returned to our home. While we were
away, Deola went to spend Christmas with her parents, but
she returned to the house the moment we were back. We all
went out on the New Year day for fun. At the beach, we
surfed around and took pictures. We returned late afternoon
to continue the rest of the holiday indoor.
I resumed office on January 2nd. Madam had given me
more assignments, which included project supervision. I felt
no qualms about that as I was greatly enjoying my job and
all that came with it.
By March, Steph’s stomach had really gone big. She kept
sending me pictures of her advancing pregnancy, pictures I
dared not let Enny see. I was amazed that Steph was excited
about the whole thing. It was so paradoxical to me. Enny
that I would have wished to become pregnant had not
conceived but an ill-conceived affair with a lady far away in
America was the one that brought pregnancy.

I was also amazed that Steph could keep the knowledge of
the pregnancy away from her mother. Madam B had never
said anything about it, so
I assumed that Steph did not tell her. Oh, how I wished it
was Enny that was expecting my baby. By the middle of
March, I was becoming concerned about Enny’s inability to
conceive.
‘Don’t you think you should see a doctor?’ I told her. ‘See a
doctor and let’s know why the delay.’
‘Good idea,’ she agreed. ‘But, don’t you think the two of us
should see a doctor?’
‘Me?’ I shook my head. My mind was busy. If I could
impregnate Steph, then it meant nothing was wrong with me.
‘I think I’m alright,’ I asserted.
‘How could you tell?’
That was a million dollar question which I dared not answer.
‘I just think I’m okay,’ I repeated.
‘Well, to start with, I’ll see a doctor,’ Enny consented.
The following day she went to see a gynecologist. Some
tests were run on her and she came with the report that
medically, all was well with
her. So, why was there no conception?
‘Let’s keep on trying then,’ I said. ‘I know God’s time is the
best.’
‘But, what are about you? When will you go for tests?’
I smiled and held her hand. ‘My dear, Enny, let me assure
you that nothing is wrong with me.’
I decided that I probably had to double my efforts in making
her conceive. We just had to do ‘it’ more than we normally
did. March 23 was my
birthday. I would be thirty-one. How times fly! This time of
last year, I was still single and earning stipends at the
coaching center. To day, I was relatively okay and was
married. Things had moved very fast within the last twelve
months. I thanked God for making me to come across
Madam B. she had been my pillar, after God almighty.
In the morning of March 23, Mandy surprised me with a
birthday cake.
‘Happy birthday, Alex,’ she complimented. ‘Wishing you long
life and prosperity.’
I was pleased. ‘Thank you, Mandy. How did you know it’s my
birthday?’
‘Madam told me,’ she replied. ‘It’s on your c.v.’
I accepted the case. ‘Thank you, Mandy. I so much
appreciate this.’
‘You’re welcome.’
About one clock, Steph called my line.
‘Happy birthday, Alex. Wishing you many happy returns.’
I was surprised. ’How did you know?’
She laughed. ‘Wall has ears, Alex.’
I sighed. ‘Thank you, Steph, for the wishes.’
‘How’s the baby?’
‘He’s kicking. He’s hale and hearty and he’s wishing you
happy birthday too.’
I smiled in spite of myself.
Later in the day, Madam gave me two hundred dollars.
‘That’s a little something for you, Alex. It’s for your birthday.’
I accepted her gift with a grateful heart.
At home, my lovely wife and her sister had prepared special
dish with wines. I was overwhelmed with their wonderful
gestures. Three days after
my birthday, Enny woke me up in the middle of the night. I
yawned and glanced at the table clock beside the bed.
‘Hope no problem, Enny darling,’ I said.
‘We’ve got to talk,’ she said.
The talk must be serious, I thought as I sat up on the bed.
‘Do you love me?’ she asked.
My heat beat quickened. Why was she asking that? Had
Steph called her to leak our ‘secret’?
‘Of course, you know I love you and will always do so.’
‘Are you sure?’
‘Look, Enny, you yourself know that I will always love you.’
She paused as if weighing my words. ‘Very good. Why then
are you doing what greatly displeases me?’
Again, my mind went into turmoil. ‘Please, Enny, stop talking
in riddles. Go straight to the point’
‘Darling, why don’t you just see a doctor? Why don’t you just
do it to please me? I want to carry your baby, dear. Why
don’t you just try and
let’s hear what the report will be?’
I felt relieved. I had thought Steph had let the cat out of the
bag. Thank God, she had not. I sighed. ‘Alright. Tomorrow
morning – later today,
rather – I’ll go and see a doctor. I promise.’
‘Oh, darling.’ She hugged me as if I had promised her a life
long desire.
True to my words, I went to a private hospital that madam
staff used at Ikeja. I hardly went to hospital and this was one
of the rare moments. I
went to meet the consultant and I told him the challenge at
the home front. He said the main test was the semen test I
had to do. I did it and
was told to come back two days later for the results. When I
went back there, the report was unfavorable. I was told I had
a serious low sperm
count.
‘I can’t believe that,’ I said heatedly. ‘no. I can’t simply
believe it.’
The doctor was emphatic. ‘It can happen,’ he explained. ‘It
happens to many men.’
I shook my head. But I had impregnated a lady, hadn’t I? So,
what’s this I was hearing?
‘There’re things we can do,’ he went on. ‘Certain fertility
drugs can be prescribed to boost your semen production.
You can avoid doing certain
things. I’m sure with fervent fertility treatment, you’ll soon be
a father.’
I’m already a father! I screamed at him in my mind. I
however restrained myself from saying anything. He gave me
some prescriptions and the
kinds of food I should eat and those I should avoid. I
thanked him and left the place. Later in the night, I told Enny
about the report.
‘I know it,’ Enny replied. ‘I know the problem cannot be from
my end.’
I was shocked by her response. ‘I don’t believe that doctor’s
report,’ I quickly put in. ‘It can’t be true.’
Enny was silent for some moments. ‘Maybe you should try
another place. Come to our staff clinic. They are good there.
What d’you say?’
I thought briefly over it and decided that I would rather go to
a neutral place. The following day, I went to St. Nicholas
Hospital. I went through
similar tests, and when the results came, it was still low
sperm count. I became worried. If all these were true, how
come Steph conceived for
me? Then a caution came into my mind. What if I was not
the father of Steph’s baby? Yes, I had met her a virgin, but
that did not stop her from going on to sleep with another
man, did it

Episode 4.

I called her that afternoon.
‘Steph, please tell me the truth, am I the father of that baby
you’re carrying?’
‘Of course, Alex. Why’re you doubting? You’re the only man
I’ve ever slept with in my life, Alex.’ I could perceive
indignation in her voice.
I was exasperated. ‘Enny is yet to conceive, so I went for a
medical test,’ I explained. ‘The result shows that I have low
count sperm. That’s
why I’m asking you.’
‘You’re the father of my baby, Alex,’ she insisted with some
vehemence. ‘Why not come over here and do DNA test?
That will resolve everything, won’t it?’
‘Well, it has not come to that,’ I quickly put in.
‘Since you’re doubting, come over here, Alex darling.’
‘It’s okay. I’ll not bother you on this again. How’s everything
over there?’
‘All is well, Alex. My expected day of delivery is 15th of
April. I wish you’re with me, Alex.’
She had started taking the dimension I did not like. I quickly
found a way to put an end to the conversation. On my own, I
thought over things
again. Something must be wrong somewhere, I decided.
How could it be that the same Alex who could not
impregnate his wife was the one
responsible for the pregnancy of Steph?
Alright, I calmed myself. There was no need to be
exasperated. I would soon get to the root of the whole
matter as time went on.I procured the
fertility drugs and started taking them.
In addition to taking the drugs, Enny advised that we should
start fervent prayers on it. Every night, we devoted some
minutes to prayers. As a
‘prayer warrior ‘ in her former church, she was at home with
lengthy prayers. Despite my experience as a church
administrator, I was not used to
long prayers. I however had to adjust.
On the second day of April, Steph called me, as usual.
‘You can send any of your body part by courier service to any
reputable medical centre here in U.S. It can be your nail,
hair, skin graft, or blood
sample . Let me know when you’re sending it and I’ll make
myself available there for the DNA.’
I sighed. ‘I don’t think that will be necessary. I only asked
about the baby’s paternity because I was confounded by this
news of low count
sperm.’
‘I don’t like the fact that you are doubting, Alex.’
‘Sorry about that. Let’s leave the matter for now.’
On the day of her delivery, Steph planted camera in the
labor room to have the incident videoed as it unfolded. She
sent it to my e-mail and I
watched it in my office. It was like being present with her in
the labour room. At a point, she had some pain just before
she ‘pushed’ and the
baby came out. I heard her muttering my name: ‘Alex, Alex.’
It was very similar to the moans she made that Sunday
morning in my bedroom,
except this time around, it was in pain not in pleasure.
At that point, I shed some tears. Surely, Steph could not be
faking all these. By the time I watched it to the end, I felt
elated that she had
delivered safely. I heard the doctor congratulating her on the
new born baby boy. I realized that I had unwittingly become
a father. I shed more
tears of joy. Somehow I was glad – very glad – that Steph had
not listened to me when I told her to go for abortion. As
guilty as I was of falling
in love with her, I felt happy that I was now a father.
But it was a joy I could not share with anyone, except with
Steph. I decided to call her, but the line could not get
through. I would try another
time. I was happy the rest of that day.
Enny noticed the mood as soon as I got home.
‘Has madam increased your pay, or is she sending you to
London for the coming summer holiday?’ she asked.
In my excitement, I went to her and lifted her. ‘No my dear.
I’m just happy.’
‘Just like that?’
‘Yeah, just like that.’
I asked her to bring chicken from the pot of stew while I
popped wine.
‘Are you sure there’s no basis for all these you’re doing?’
I shook my head. ‘I’m just happy, my dear.’
I slept very blissfully that night. The following morning, while
I was preparing for work, Enny asked a very unusual
question.
‘What happened in your sleep yester night?’ She asked.
I was nonplussed. ‘What happened, how?’ I parried.
‘You called Steph’s name many times.’
I was surprised. ‘Did I?’
‘Yes, you did.’
‘I’m sorry. It must be a slip of tongue.’
I could see her staring at me. ‘Is that all to it?’ she asked.
‘That’s all to it, my darling wife.’ I went over to give her a
kiss. She relaxed. Just before we left the house she served
coffee. We soon left the
house. As usual I dropped her at the bus stop. I arrived
office early and got down to work. A few minutes to eight,
madam came to the office.
That meant she came early. The office assistant told me she
would like to see me. That meant there was something
important.
‘Good morning, ma’am,’ I greeted her as soon as I stepped
inside her office.
‘Morning,’ she answered curtly. My heart leapt up in
apprehension. Something definitely was in the offing.
I sat down and looked briefly at her. She was in a bad mood.
‘Alex,’ she started. ‘You’re such a disappointment. Why? Why
did you impregnate Steph?’ Why?’
I opened my mouth in shock. So, she had finally got to
know. I wanted to say something but no words came out.

Hi Admin on WhatsApp +2348022720459 for you to be added to our story platform but state clearly how you get to know about us.
‘Not only that, the two of you conspired and kept the
information away from me. You made a fool of me! Why
must you treat me like that?’
Again I opened my mouth but no words came out. I got up
from my seat and prostrated.
‘Just look at you,’ she said in derision. ‘I told you to take her
as a sister but you went ahead and impregnate her. You
should be ashamed of
yourself, Alex.’
I could not say a thing. I remained on the floor.
She shook her head.’I’m so disappointed in you. So
disappointed.’
What could I say? Nothing other than to show penitence.
‘I’m so sorry, ma’am,’ I finally found my voice.
She shook her head again. ‘I should have fired you, but I
won’t do. However even if you are my blood son, you’ll take
some punishment. Stand
up.’
I got up. It was like I was on trial and the Magistrate was
about to deliver her judgment.
‘You’re to go on suspension. Immediate and indefinite
suspension without pay. Go to your office and hand over all
the files you are working on to
Mandy. Now, get out of my office.’
I stared at her. I was too shocked to say a word.
‘What’re you waiting for? Getting moving!’ she bawled. I had
never seen her in such an angry mood before. I left for my
office and started
packing my things.
There you are, a voice told me. Finally you’ve allowed a lady
to make you stumble. When a man could not control his
libido, this is one of the
things that happened to him.
I shook my head as I felt sorry for myself. I was still packing
and arranging the files and writing some reports when
Mandy came in.
‘Alex, how could you do that?’ she asked.
‘Do what?’ I parried.
‘You’re still asking me! Osanobua, how could you impregnate
madam’s daughter? She just told me that you not only
impregnated Steph, but the
two of you hid the fact from her until she delivered the baby.
How could you do that, Alex? You that you’re married!’
I wanted to tell her that pregnancy occurred before my
wedding but kept quiet.
‘Eh, Alex. So all that play play you and Steph were doing, you
were actually sleeping with her!’
Now, this nosey Mandy was getting on my nerves, but I still
managed to keep my cool.
‘Na wa o,’ she went on. ‘Didn’t you tell her that you had a
lady you wanted to marry; that you were planning towards
your wedding?’
I felt I had had enough of her pontificating. ‘Mandy, if you
don’t mind, I’m busy. You can see that I’m trying to write a
report here.’

She looked at me briefly, pursed her lips and left my office. I
concluded my reports, gathered the files and took them to
Mandy’s office.
‘Here, madam said I should hand over to you. The reports
are here.’
I dropped the files on her table.
‘So, what will you be doing now Alex?’
‘I don’t know yet,’ I said simply.
‘And your wife. How will she react to this?’
‘How am I supposed to know?’
I sighed and went back to my office. I put my papers and
other effects in my bag and left the office. I locked the place
and went to hand over
the key to Mandy. Hi Admin on WhatsApp +2348022720459 for you to be added to our story platform but state clearly how you get to know about us.
‘So long, Mandy.’
‘Sorry, Alex,’ she said with some empathy. ‘Take care of
yourself.’
‘Thank you.’ I left the office building and drove the car
towards Ikeja under the bridge. My mind was busy. There
was no way I could hide the
fact that I had been suspended from Enny. What I was
contemplating was if I should tell her or not the real reason
for the suspension.
If I should tell her the whole truth, hell would be let loose. If
I didn’t tell her now, someday, somehow, she would still get
to know. Why not tell
her now and damn the consequences? I shook my head. No,
I would still tell her but not now. It would be one thing at a
time. The news of my
suspension would be devastating enough.
I had no where to go so I drove home. I removed my bag
from the car and as I was locking it, Juliet, one of my
neighbour’s daughters who had
become friendly with Deola, my wife’s sister, came out of
the building.
‘Good morning, uncle Alex. What happened that you’re back?’
I smiled at her. ‘Morning, Juliet. I came to pick something.’
She smiled too, waved at me and moved on.
I went into my apartment. Deola had left for her school and
would not be back until the weekend. I sat down heavily and
thought over events.
It was an irony that just the previous day, I was happy that
Steph had successfully delivered and that I was father of a
bouncing baby boy.
Today, I was depressed as my job was hanging in the air and
the whole bubble of the relationship I had with Steph was
about to burst before
the eyes of my wife.
But wait a minute. Hadn’t Steph said she would take care of
her mother’s aspect and that I should have no fear? So, what
happened to that
promise now? Why was her mother reacting so harshly as if
Steph and I were not adult; and as if the whole affair was
not consensual?
I decided to call Steph. Her phone rang for a long time
before she picked it.
‘You woke me up,’ she said.
In my anxiety to speak with her, I had forgotten that we were
not using the same time zone. ‘I’ m sorry about that,’ I
offered. ‘How are you and
the baby?”
‘We’re fine. You need to see your baby, dear. He’s so
beautiful.’
I was slightly happy to hear that. ‘That’s good. Glory be to
God. I just came back from the office now.’
‘What happened?’
‘Your mum has suspended me from work.’
‘What? What happened?’
I sighed. ‘I thought you said you would handle the pregnancy
issue from your end.’
‘Yes I did.’
I sighed again. ‘You obviously didn’t handle it well. I was
suspended for impregnating you and keeping the news from
her.’
There was a pause. ‘Did you hear what I just said?’
‘Yes, I heard you. But it can’t be for that reason, you must
have done something else.’
‘I didn’t do any other thing. She herself mentioned the
pregnancy issue as my offence.’
There was another pause. ‘It can’t be that,’ Steph insisted.
‘She knew about the pregnancy months ago.’

There was another pause. ‘It can’t be that,’ Steph insisted.
‘She knew about the pregnancy months ago.’
My heart skipped a beat. ‘Really?’
‘Yeah. I told her I was carrying your baby, and said I was the
cause.’
‘You don’t mean it, Steph!’
‘I mean it. I told her when the pregnancy was four months. I
pleaded that I would have like to have the baby and she
agreed. She even sent
some money for antenatal, despite telling her I could take
care of myself. How would I be pregnant for nine months
and my mum would not know about it?’
I could not believe my ears. ‘But did she know all along that
I was the one responsible for the pregnancy?’
‘Yes. The same day I told her I was pregnant, I told her it’s
your baby. Mummy knew all this while. Do you know I also
sent the pictures of my
growing tummy to her? You must have done something else
for her to suspend you.’
I just couldn’t believe this. ‘But I didn’t do any other thing.
The reason she gave for my suspension was that of the
pregnancy and that we
conspired to keep her in the dark.’
‘Ask her again. Ask her your offence.’
I sighed in exasperation. Sometimes I could simply not
understand Madam B. If indeed she had been acquainted
with the news of Steph’s
pregnancy all this while, how come she didn’t react before
now? How she bottle up all her feeling for about five
months, only to be reacting
now? I would never understand Madam B.
Steph and I chatted a little more before she hanged up. I
shook my head, wondering. There was no need I asked
madam my real offence. If she
said it was because of Steph’s pregnancy, so be it. Her
reaction was what I would call ‘delayed reaction.’
I decided to leave Madam B’s angle for now and
concentrate on how to handle Enny. For now I would not tell
her the real reason for my suspension. I lolled in the house
till early evening when Enny came back few minutes after
five p.m.
‘You’re early today,” she commented, coming to give me a
peck.
‘Yeah.’
I allowed her to change to casual and to join me in the
sitting-room.
‘I’ve been suspended from work,’ I said. Expectedly, Enny
reacted very sharply.
‘What! What happened?’
‘A misappropriation of some funds meant for the school
building project occurred and I and the accounting officer
were suspended. A board of
auditors is already looking into the matter. They will soon
come out with their findings and I’ll be vindicated. There’s
nothing to be afraid of,
honey’
I wrapped my right hand round her shoulders. She put her
head on my chest
‘But are you sure? Are you sure you’re not involved in any
shady act?’
‘Of course. I’ll be vindicated. There’s nothing to be worried
about, my darling.’ I rubbed her back and that seemed to
calm her down.

‘Of course. I’ll be vindicated. There’s nothing to be worried
about, my darling.’ I rubbed her back and that seemed to
calm her down.
After some minutes, she said: ‘Should I call madam and
explain to her that you could not be involved in financial
scandal? I mean I could vouch for you. Since I knew you, I
can say you’re not covetous when it comes to money.’
‘Thanks from trusting me, darling, but there is absolutely no
need to call madam. I’m sure in a matter of days, the truth
will come out.’
She left for the kitchen to start preparing dinner. I went to
join her there.
‘So, how was your office today?’ I asked.
‘Fine. We’ve started the in-house training I told you. I mean
the three-day training. It’s very interesting.’
I nodded and watched her as she poured water in the pot
and put it on the gas cooker. She didn’t need to ask me
what I would like to eat as I
had long ago told her that whatever she prepared was okay
by me.
I playfully smacked her bum.
‘Hey, we’re in the kitchen, mister.’
‘I know, madam.’ I held her by the waist. ‘Don’t worry. I won’t
disturb your cooking.’
She giggled. ‘You are, already.’
I slackened my hold and finally released her. When the water
boiled, she put poundo yam floor in the water and stirred.
Soon, the meal was
ready. She warmed the vegetable soup and dished the meal.
We ate in silence. Thereafter we watched the t.v for some
time.
‘What will you be doing now during the day?’ she asked.
I shook my head. ‘Honestly, I don’t know yet.’
‘Do you still have money to keep us going till the end of the
month or do I withdraw some money?’
I love that gesture. ‘Don’t worry, darling. I have some money
in savings.’
‘All the same I’ll have to support you. I’ll withdrawn some
money tomorrow.’
We were sitting on the sofa. I pulled her to myself and
wrapped my hands round her. It was the following morning
when she had dressed up for
work that I realized the import of being suspended from
work. After Enny had left the house, I felt empty.
I didn’t know how long the suspension would be since
madam said indefinitely. I was not the lazy type so I just had
to find something to do. But
what could I do?
I switched on my i-pad and went on the internet. I read the
headlines of Nigerian newspapers. Then an idea came to
me. Why not write? Find a
subject and a topic to write about. After considering that for
some moments, I decided to write a fiction. I was good in
creative writing. This
should be my pastime, for now.
Immediately, I started working on my fiction, penning down
the plot, setting, theme and characters. I was still working
up till noon when Steph
called by Skype.
‘Oh, Alex baby, are you just at home doing nothing?’ she
asked in concern.
‘I’m at home but I’m doing something,’ I replied.
‘What’re you doing?’
‘I’m writing a story.’
‘Oh. That must be quite boring.’
I smiled. ‘Not totally boring. How’s the baby?’
‘Baby’s fine. He’s very fine. I’ve decided to name him Alex.
Alex Labi junior.’
That was my name. ‘It’s a fine name,’ I said.
‘He looks just like you, Alex. Now, I’ve got another Alex on
my hands.’
‘I’m happy to hear that.’
I winked at her. ‘He’s sleeping, right?’
‘Yeah. That boy sleeps a lot.’
‘It’s better he sleeps than he makes trouble.’
‘Yeah. Mum said she’ll be coming over to the States next
week to see her grandson.’
‘Really?’ I was surprised to hear that Madam B would be
travelling to the U.S.A again.

‘Yes, and she seems happy about it.’
‘Wow, that’s wonderful.’
‘I asked mummy why she suspended you from work. She
said I should not worry; that she just wanted you to learn
some lesson. Are you really
sure you didn’t offend mum in another way?’
I looked exasperated. ‘As far as I know, I didn’t commit any
other offence. But if I did, I would be glad if she could let
me know so that I can
properly apologize.’
‘Anyway, don’t worry, darling. I’m sure she’ll soon ask you to
resume work. I’ll ensure she does that.’
‘Thanks, Steph. You’re a darling.’
‘For now, send me the e-mail of your account details. I’ll
send some money to you.’
‘You don’t have to do that,’ I said quickly. ‘I should be the
one to send money for the upkeep of Junior.’
‘It’s alright by me. I told you I can take care of the boy by
myself. For now, let me send some money to you. Send me
your account details.’
I gave up. ‘Alright. Thanks a lot.’
‘But I’ll prefer that you come and join us over here. Your son
and I are waiting.’
I suddenly realized that the boy was now used as an enticing
point. I smiled.
‘Thanks for the offer,’ I said.

For the next two days, I went through the same routine.
After Enny had left for work, I would work on my i-pad or
laptop. The fourth day of
starting my suspension was a Friday. I thanked God it was
Friday. I had sent details of my account to Steph and she
sent me seven hundred
and fifty dollars. It was a lot of money when changed into
naira. I appreciated Steph’s generosity.
That weekend too was more of a routine. But I was glad to
have Enny around. On Sunday evening, around six p.m., I
received a call from
Madam B.
‘Are you very busy, or can you come to the house?’ She
asked. I knew that by ‘the house’, she meant her house.
‘I can come to the house, ma’am.’
‘Good. See you.’

‘Yes, and she seems happy about it.’

Episode 6.

That weekend too was more of a routine. But I was glad to
have Enny around. On Sunday evening, around six p.m., I
received a call from Madam B.
‘Are you very busy, or can you come to the house?’ She
asked. I knew that by ‘the house’, she meant her house.
‘I can come to the house, ma’am.’
‘Good. See you.’
That meant something must be in the offing again. I tried to
recollect her tone. She had sounded relaxed.
‘Madam says I should come over to her house,’ I told Enny.
‘What’s the development? I hope she’s not planning to get
you arrested.’
I grinned. ‘I don’t think so. If she wants to arrest me, she
knows where I live.’
I went to give Enny a peck. ‘I’ll be alright,’ I reassured, picking
the car key and driving out of the compound. I drove to
Magodo GRA, trying to
make my mind blank. As it was Sunday evening, it took me a
few minutes to get there. I drove inside the compound and
parked the car.
Immediately I stepped inside the magnificent building, the
house maid informed me that madam was waiting for me in
her room upstairs. I met
Sophia on my way up the stairs.
‘Uncle Alex, it’s quite an age,’ she said as a way of greeting.
‘Sophia, how’re you?
‘I’m cool.’
‘I came to see mummy.’
‘Yeah. She’s in her room.’
I went to madam’s room and knocked gently. ‘Yes, come in,’
she said from within the room.
I turned the knob and went inside. She was sitting by the
table that had a desktop and a laptop.
‘Good evening, mummy,’ I greeted.
‘Good morning Alex.’ She motioned me to a chair not far
from her. I thanked her and took the seat. She faced me
squarely. ‘How’s your wife?’
she asked.
‘Oh, she’s fine, ma.’
She nodded. ‘What have you been doing with yourself?’
I grinned briefly. ‘I’ve been trying to write a book, ma’am. A
fiction.’
She nodded again. ‘That’s good. What’s the title?’
‘I’ve not really concluded on that, but I’m thinking of ‘Victims
of Passion.’’
She looked at me curiously. ‘Who are the victims of passion?’
‘The protagonist and some other main characters. I’m still
developing the storyline.’
She sighed. ‘How did your wife take the news of you
impregnating another lady?’
I blinked rapidly. I never thought she would ask that question.
‘I’ve not told her, ma.’
She raised an eyebrow. ‘So, when d’you intend to tell her?’
‘Soon, ma’am. Very soon.’
‘The earlier you tell her, the better. She will definitely fight you
over the matter.’
I nodded. I found nothing to say there.

She sighed. ‘How did your wife take the news of you

‘The earlier you tell her, the better. She will definitely fight you

I nodded. I found nothing to say there.
‘Did you see my action as harsh?’
Again, I wasn’t expecting that. I shook my head. ‘Not exactly,
ma. I think I deserve whatever punishment came my way, on
this matter.’
‘Did you love Enny?’
Once again, I was surprised by Madam B’s question. ‘Yes,
ma. I do love her.’
‘Just slightly or much?’
‘Much, ma. Very much, ma.’
‘So, why did you go ahead and impregnate another lady?’ The
question was like a bash. But why was she asking all these
questions?
She was studying my countenance. ‘I … I like Steph too, ma.’
She looked at me sternly. ‘If every man should impregnate
the ladies they like, the world will be full of unwanted babies.’
I looked down. I was beginning to feel uncomfortable. Get Admin on +2348022720459 stating how you get to know about us and to be added to our story platform.
‘Did you meet her as a virgin?’
I nodded. ‘Yes, ma.’
She suddenly shrugged. ‘Well, what had been done had been
done. My problem is she’s obsessed with marrying you.’
I looked at her briefly and looked away.
‘Don’t tell me you’re not aware of it.’
‘I’m aware, mummy.’
‘So, what’re you going to do about it?’
I was silent. I had no answer to that.
‘On one hand, I am angry with you for not controlling your
libido. On another hand, I feel happy to be a grandmother.
Are you still planning to
have another child by Stephanie?’
‘No, ma’am, I don’t think so.’
‘You don’t think so? What an answer!’
I was silent again.
‘You really have to pray that this incident will not wreck your
marriage.’
I nodded.
‘Would you have wished to marry Steph?’
I nodded. ‘If Enny is not there, I would have wished to marry
Steph.’
‘And what if her mother says no?’
I smiled. ‘I will try to convince her mother, ma.’
‘And if her mother still says no?’
‘I will ask Steph if she really wants me. If her answer is yes,
then I will go ahead and marry her, no matter what her
mother will say or do.’
She looked at me sharply. ‘You don’t mean that, Alex.’
‘I mean it ma,’ I replied assertively, ‘If not for Enny, I will go
ahead and marry Steph and damn the consequence.’
She suddenly smiled. ‘What can you do to make her stop
loving you?’
I blinked rapidly. ‘I don’t know ma.’
‘It’s not too good that she should keep having those feelings
for you. I mean, for God’s sake you’re married.’
I nodded. ‘I’m sorry, I don’t know what to do.’

She appeared to be in pensive mood, then she sighed. ‘Well, I
suppose she’ll somehow realize that you’re married and that
she should move on with her life.’
‘I hope she’ll realize that too.’ Then, a question came to my
mind. ‘Can I ask you something, ma?’
‘I know what you want to ask me.’
‘How could you tell? I’ve not even asked it.’
‘You wanted to ask when I knew about the pregnancy, and
why I didn’t react all these while.’
I opened my mouth in astonishment. ‘Exactly. You guessed
tight, ma!’
‘I won’t answer that question.’
‘But why? It’s a harmless question, isn’t it?’
‘Harmless or not, I won’t answer it.’
I sighed in exasperation.
‘Now, back to the main issue. Let me advise you to drop any
idea about marrying Steph. You’re married, focus on your wife
and forget
about Steph.’
I nodded but did not say a word.
‘The mistake you and Steph made remains indelible. However
you must avoid making any more mistake. Love your wife and
forget about
my daughter. No one is denying the fact that you are the
father of her son. But that is all. No more secret love or secret
affair. She is still
young and naive. That’s why she is urging you to come over
to America to join her.’
She stopped to gauge my reaction. I was surprised she knew
about Steph’s prodding, and it showed on my face.
She sighed deeply. ‘Thank you for your time. I called you to
seriously advise you to stop further secret affair with Steph.
That affair will not get you anywhere, so stop it. Have a nice
day.’
I gave a deep bow. ‘Thank you very much, ma, for your advice
and wise counsel. I will pray to God to help me, ma. I will do
my best to be a faithful husband.’ I stood up. ‘Thank you, ma
and good night.’
‘Goodnight, my regards to your wife.’
‘Alright, ma.’
I left her room and went downstairs. I kicked the engine of
my car into life and drove out of the house. So, madam had
called me over to
her house just to advise that I should stop further secret affair
with Steph and that I should bury the idea of thinking of
marrying her! I whistled to myself. Madam B was right. Very
right.
I drove home, thinking about all madam had said. I believed
it was high time I withdrew whatever affection I had for
Steph. I must
appreciate madam for her kindness and understanding. Still
going ahead with any love plan with Steph would not augur
well for me. It certainly looked like I was talking advantage of
her seeming innocence.
But my main concern was how to break the news of the baby
to Enny, my wife. She would certainly be disappointed in me
and I dreaded to see how she would react.
The clock on the dashboard of the car revealed the time to
be few minutes to eight when I got back home. The television
was on in the sitting room, but only Deola was there.
‘Welcome, uncle,’ she greeted.
‘Yeah, how d”you do?’
‘Fine.’
Enny must be in the bedroom. I went straight there. She sat,
or rather, huddled, on the bed. A look at her face showed that
something
grievous had happened. I stopped short.

A FATAL LOVE (Sequel to THE SUGAR MUMMY)*
Episode 7

Enny must be in the bedroom. I went straight there. She sat,
or rather, huddled, on the bed. A look at her face showed
that something grievous had happened. I stopped short.
‘Oh my God, Enny darling, what happened?’
Her face looked like she had been crying. What could have
happened? Before I left a couple of hours ago, all was well. I
sat on the bed by her side and held her hands.
‘Enny darling, what is wrong?’
‘What did you discuss with your mother-in-law?’ she asked.
‘What mother-in-law? I went to meet Madam B. Have you
forgotten?’
‘Is she not your mother-in-law? Didn’t you go there to
discuss how you will travel to America so that you and
Steph can have more babies?’
‘What?’ I became stiff. ‘Enny, what, what’re you talking
about?’
‘You know what I’m talking about. How could you do this to
me? How could you impregnate Steph and be deceiving me
all this while?’
I opened my mouth. How did Enny get to know? Who told
her? I left her hands and stood up. My hands shook while my
knees buckled.
Suddenly, I felt feverish.
‘Steph called me to say she had a baby boy for you. Why did
you bother to marry me? Why didn’t you just go ahead and
marry her?’
She broke into tears again. That very moment, I felt so sad.
‘Enny, please I’m so sorry. It was not my intention to marry
her or get her impregnated. It was all a mistake. I’m so
sorry. Please, I’m very sorry.’
‘And you didn’t tell me all this while. How could you treat me
like that.? How could you?’
I moved to her and went on my knees. She covered her face
with her hands.
‘I’m sorry,’ I went on. ‘At this point, let me tell you the truth. I
was actually suspended from work by madam over this
issue. There was
nothing like any misappropriation of funds.’
She looked at me sadly and shook her head. ‘You’re such a
liar, Alex. God, I can’t believe you could do all these. How
many other lies are
you going to confess?’
I was very ashamed of myself. ‘No more lies, Enny.’
She suddenly wiped the tears off her face, picked a pillow
and stood up.
‘Where’re you going?’ I asked.
‘Away from you and your lies!’ She left the bedroom. I stood
up and followed her. She went to the second bedroom
where Deola was
staying.
‘Enny, I said I’m sorry.’ She didn’t say anything. The door of
the room was slammed to my face and bolted from inside. I
sighed and went
back to our bedroom. There you are, a voice told me, you’re
finally reaping what you have sown.
I sat on the bed in dejection. I wasn’t surprised that Enny
was taking the matter this way. I had always dreaded this
moment. I thought
over the issue again. Perhaps, Steph had told Enny since she
realized that I couldn’t bring myself to doing it.
But, what kind of coincidence was that? Why was it the time
madam called me over to her place that Steph chose to
reveal the affair to
Enny? I wasn’t happy with Steph. She shouldn’t have done
that. It looked more like she was wifully doing things to
wreck my marriage.

But, what kind of coincidence was that? Why was it the time

reveal the affair to
Enny? I wasn’t happy with Steph. She shouldn’t have done
that. It looked more like she was wilfully doing things to
wreck my marriage. If she believed what she had just done
would make me to abandon my wife and run into her waiting
hands, then she was making a big mistake.
I lay down on the bed, a disturbed man. I would have to
plead with Enny more. I would have to try to convince her
that such a mistake would never repeat itself again. Now, I
decided I had been too weak with Steph. This was the time
to severe my cozy relationship with her. She remained the
mother of my baby but, just like her mother said, there
should be no further lovey-lovey talk or relationship.
Two hours later, I was still lying on the bed, staring at
nothing. I would give Enny some time to calm down before I
would talk with her again. I would probably have to give her
till the following evening before talking with her.
My phone rang. It was Madam B on the line again. ‘Hello,
madam.’
‘Hello, Alex. You’re to resume work tomorrow.’
‘Ah, thank you, ma’am. God bless you, ma’am.’
The line was dead. I got up from the bed and knelt down to
give thanks to God. After that, I went to the bedroom Enny
was staying to
break the news to her. I had to knock hard before the door
was opened. It was Deola that opened the door. The room
was in darkness.
‘I’m sorry, uncle Alex, sister Eniola doesn’t wish to see you
now,’ Deola said.
‘Yes, I understand.’ I spoke loud: ‘Listen Enny, madam just
called now that I should resume work tomorrow.’
I turned to Deola. ‘In case she didn’t hear me, tell her I’m
resuming work tomorrow.’
‘Okay, uncle.’
I went back to the main bedroom. Wow, so I would be
returning to work the following day! That was good news.
The bad news was Enny
was still mightily angry at me.
The following morning, Enny refused to see me. She even
sent her sister to come and pick the clothes she would be
wearing to her work
place from our wardrobe. She also refused my ‘lift’. I drove
to work and got there by quarter to eight. Mandy soon came
to my office.
‘Aren’t you so lucky, Alex? You only spent few days of
suspension and madam called you back. I know another
member of staff that was
suspended and it took months before he was recalled.
You’re lucky, Alex.’
‘Yes, I’m lucky,’ I replied. She handed over all the files I had
handed to her plus some new files.
‘Madam called me this morning that I should hand over all
these files to you, and you’re to start working on them
immediately.’
I nodded and took the files from her. I soon started to work.
Not very long after I got to the office, Madam B came. I
went to meet her. I
prostrated to thank her for lifting the indefinite suspension
she slammed on me so soon.
‘It’s okay, Alex. The important thing is that you must learn.
Learn not to be carried away by overtures from women.
Learn that now that
you’re married, you must be faithful to your wife.’
‘I’m learning, ma’am.’
‘Good. Sit down.’
I took a seat opposite her.
‘I’ll be traveling to the U.S before the end of this week.
There’s no problem concerning my health issue. I’ll be
traveling to tie some loose
ends over there. Make sure the office continues to run
efficiently while I’m away.’
‘No problem, ma’am. I’ll put in my best.’
I went back to my office and continued my work. I had a lot
to do, so I was still at work by five thirty. I decided to call
Enny to inform her
that I would be coming home a bit late. Her phone rang on
and on, but she did not pick it.

Enny to inform her that I would be coming home a bit late.
Her phone rang on and on, but she did not pick it.
When it was six o’clock, I decided to call it a day. The traffic
had built up, so I wasn’t able to get home on time. It was
dusk when I parked the car in our compound. I noticed that
our apartment was in the darkness as no light was put on.
Could that mean Enny too had not come back. I opened the
sitting-room door and switched on the light. The first thing
that caught my attention was the note left on the glass
center table.
I moved towards it and read.
I have decided to go so that you will be free to marry your
darling Steph. I’m with my parents. Don’t bother about me.
Enny.
What! I could not contain my astonishment. What was this?
How could Enny leave just like that? Were we not married
for better or for worse? No wonder, she had refused to pick
my call. I called her number again, but she would not pick it.
I then decided to call her mother.
‘Ah, good evening, ma,’ I greeted as soon as she answered
the call.
‘Good evening, Alex.’
‘Yes, ma. First, I want to confirm if my wife is there. I mean
she’s not in my house.’
‘Yes, she’s here.’
‘Please, ma, tell her I’ve been calling her number and she
should pick her call. Please.’
There was a slight pause. ‘Okay, Alex.’
‘Thank you, ma. Good night.’
‘Good night.’
I called Enny’s number again, and just when I thought she
would not pick it, she did.
‘Oh, thank goodness. Enny, my darling, why did you have to
leave the house?’
‘Don’t darling me,’ she blurted out.
Before I could say anything further, she cut the line.

Episode 8

I called Enny’s number again, and just when I thought she
would not pick it, she did.
‘Oh, thank goodness. Enny, my darling, why did you have to
leave the house?’
‘Don’t darling me,’ she blurted out.
Before I could say anything further, she cut the line. That
meant she was angrier than I thought. What would I do
now? There was no doubt that her going to her parents’
house meant they were aware of what had happened. I was
sure they would see me as very irresponsible. Enny’s mother
would particularly detest my action. Oh, God!
I went to the bedroom to remove my office clothes. I didn’t
like the situation of Enny going back to her parents’ house
one bit. I never imagined that this kind of thing would
happen in my marriage, a marriage that was less than a year
old!
I decided that the following day, immediately after closing
from work, I would drive straight to the parents’ house, off
Demurin road, Ketu.
I would plead with her and her parents that my affair with
Steph was the work of the devil, and that it would never
happen again. Yes, that
was what I would do.
Surprisingly, few minutes later, Deola came into the house.
‘I thought you went to the campus and you would not be
back until Friday,’ I said.
‘Yes, I forgot to take a very important book along. I’ll be
going back tomorrow.’
I nodded. ‘It’s okay. Your sister is not in the house.’
Deola looked surprised. ‘Where did she go?’
‘She went back to your parents’ house.’
‘That’s serious. But uncle Alex, what did you do to her?’
I looked surprised. ‘You mean, she didn’t tell you?’
She shook her head. ’She only told me you offended her.’
I sighed.
‘You must have done something very terrible for her to be
reacting this way.’ Deola looked at me expectantly.
I nodded. ‘Yes, indeed, I’ve offended her.’ I decided to tell
Deola the truth. ‘I got a lady pregnant by mistake.’
‘What!’ Her mouth was open. ‘Uncle Alex, how could you do
that?’
‘It was a terrible thing,’ I admitted. ‘And I’m so sorry for it.
When you see her, tell her I’m awfully sorry. That I truly love
her, and that the ugly situation will never repeat itself.’
‘I can’t believe you did that.’
‘Yes, indeed, it’s unfortunate.’
She brought her phone out and called her sister. They
conversed briefly.
‘I’ll be going to join her,’ she announced.
I nodded. I didn’t expect anything else.
‘Is there any food you would like me to prepare for you?’
‘No, don’t worry. I’ll take care of myself.’
She soon left the house. I was once again home alone.

I sat down on the sofa to assess my situation. There was no
doubt that I was in a big mess. But then, everything called
for calmness and tact. I must be careful. I decided to call
Steph. This thing she had done by informing Enny about the
baby was very distasteful.
‘Hello, Steph,’ I greeted her as soon as she came on line.
‘Hi, Alex darling.’
‘I’m not happy with you,’ I blurted out.
‘What? Why, Alex?’
‘Why did you tell Enny about the baby? Why did you go
against your promise that you would not tell her a thing?’
‘Is it not better that I told her? The earlier, the better, Alex.’
‘No. You shouldn’t have done that. You should have left that
matter to me to handle. Why must you take it upon yourself
to do it? Now, see
what you’ve caused. She has packed out of my house!’
‘Don’t feel bad about it, Alex baby. If she moves out of the
house, good thing. Give her a divorce and come over here.
Your baby and I are
waiting.’

‘You don’t know what you’re saying.’ I was very angry with
her postulation. I cut off the line. She called me back but I
refused to receive
the call.
I was not pleased with her at all. I lost appetite and slept in
the sitting-room without eating supper. It wasn’t a pleasant
experience at all.
The following morning, I tried to do my work without letting
Enny’s matter bother me. After work, I drove to Enny’s
father’s house. I was
lucky I met Enny and her parents already in the house. I was
ushered into the sitting-room where I was asked what drinks
I would like to
take.
‘No, thanks,’ I declined. It was better I faced my purpose of
being there.
‘I have come to see you, mummy and daddy,’ I began. ‘First,
I must apologize profusely for the incident that happened. It
was a very
unfortunate and avoidable one. It happened weeks before
my wedding with Enny. The lady in question thereafter
traveled to America, from
where she called to inform me that the casual affair had
brought about pregnancy. All my efforts to make her abort
the unwanted and
unplanned baby fell on deaf ears. She said she would go
ahead and have the baby,
‘I never planned for it, neither did I want it. It was the shame
and the embarrassment that made it very difficult to tell
Enny before now.
When my employer heard about it, she was very displeased
too. As a matter of fact, she suspended me from work as a
result. It was only
yesterday I resumed work.
‘My coming here was just to plead with my wife and to beg
you that such a mistake would never happen again. I’m so
sorry it happened.
Please, I beg for forgiveness.’
I stood up from my seat and prostrated.
‘Hmn,’ the man of the house sighed. ‘Please, sit down. So,
are you telling us now that the other lady has become your
new wife, or what?’
I sat down again. ‘New wife? Oh no, sir. Enny remains my
only wife. The child has come, there’s nothing I can do
about it, now. But I’ve
learnt from the mistake. Enny is my only wife.’
‘How can we be sure about that?’ Enny’s mother blurted out.
‘See, Alex, you’ve done a terrible thing. How can you do this
to your new
wife? Since you’re in love with the other lady, why don’t you
go ahead and marry her instead of subjecting Eniola to this
embarrassment
and ridicule?’
‘I didn’t have the intention of marrying the other lady. Enny
has been my choice all along. What happened was a mistake
and the work of
the devil.’
‘That is it. The devil always takes the blame when something
like this happens,’ Enny’s father said.
‘There’s no point for long talks,’ Enny’s mother said
authoritatively. ‘Alex should forget about Eniola and go
ahead with his Americana wife.’

‘There’s no point for long talks,’ Enny’s mother said
authoritatively. ‘Alex should forget about Eniola and go
ahead with his Americana wife.’
‘Oh, no, don’t talk like that, ma,’ I quickly put in. ‘Enny is my
love. Enny is my wife. It was just a mistake and it won’t
happen again.’
I faced my wife who had remained silent all the while. ‘Enny,
you know I love you. This one is the work of the devil. We
must not allow this to circumvent our relationship.’
‘How are we sure another lady is not carrying your
pregnancy, or that the lady in America will not have more
children for you?’ Enny’s mother said, going for the jugular.
‘You should be ashamed of yourself, Alex. You could not
impregnate your wife, but you could impregnate another lady
outside your matrimonial home.’
I felt stabbed by those words, but kept quiet.
Enny’s father quickly intervened. ‘Alright, Alex. We’ve heard
you. Enny will need some time to get over this and to be
trusting again. Give her some time. Let her remain here.
When she gets over the trauma, she’ll come back to you.
That is, if indeed you really want her back, and you’re going
to be a faithful husband that you should be.’
‘I’ll live up to my words, I promise,’ I said. I turned to Enny.
‘My dear, when are you coming back to the house?’
‘You can’t rush her,’ her mother quickly interjected. ‘It’s like
you don’t really know the gravity of what you have done.
This is the kind of thing that derails marriages and makes
divorce rate to go up. Please don’t rush my daughter o.’
I thanked my father-in-law and mother-law for their time and
consideration, winked at my wife – who hardly looked at me –
and left the place.
As I drove home, I was a little bit satisfied about my
mission, although I was miffed by the role played by Enny’s
mother. She had a great influence over her daughter, and I
had no doubt that she was instrumental to Enny leaving my
house in the first place. All the same, I believe in a matter of
days, Enny would come back to my house – our home.
When I got home, I decided to cook noddles and boil eggs.
Thank God I had a carton of noddles in the house. That
would suffice as my meal for now. I realized that I was living
like a bachelor again and I didn’t find it funny.
